Why Summer Learning Matters: Helping Girls Stay Curious, Connected, and Confident
Summer is often seen as a break from school, but it can also be one of the most meaningful seasons for growth.
Without the structure of the traditional classroom day, girls have more room to explore new interests, ask questions, move their bodies, build friendships, try something unfamiliar, and discover more about who they are becoming. Summer learning does not have to look like textbooks or worksheets. It can happen through a book that sparks imagination, a hands-on project, a game that teaches teamwork, a conversation with a mentor, or a moment of courage when a girl tries something new.
At Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, we see summer as a season full of opportunity. Through supportive programming, trusted adults, and a campus environment rooted in connection, girls are encouraged to stay active, curious, engaged, and inspired.
In recognition of National Summer Learning Week, July 6–10, 2026, we’re highlighting five important areas that help girls continue learning and growing all summer long: Literacy & Learning, Internships & Career, Wellness, Health & Sports, STEM, and Community & Leadership.
Literacy & Learning
Reading, storytelling, writing, and creative expression all help girls build language, imagination, and confidence in their own ideas.
During the summer months, literacy can show up in many different ways. It might be a girl discovering a new book, writing about her experience, sharing a story with a friend, or asking a question that leads to a deeper conversation. These moments matter because they keep curiosity alive.
Learning is not limited to the classroom. When girls are encouraged to read, think, create, and explore, they begin to see themselves as capable learners. They build the confidence to ask questions, form opinions, and engage with the world around them.
At Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, summer learning creates space for girls to stay connected to their curiosity in ways that feel active, joyful, and personal.
Internships & Career
Career readiness does not begin with a first job. It begins much earlier, when girls are given the chance to imagine what is possible.
Exposure matters. When girls meet mentors, learn about different careers, hear from trusted adults, and participate in real-world experiences, they begin to expand the way they see their future. A simple conversation can spark an idea. A new experience can help a girl think, “I could do that.” A supportive adult can help her recognize strengths she may not have noticed yet.
Summer is an ideal time for this kind of exploration. Without the pressure of the school-year schedule, girls can learn about leadership, responsibility, communication, teamwork, and future pathways in a more hands-on way.
These experiences help girls understand that their voices, skills, and dreams have value.
Wellness, Health & Sports
Whole-girl development means supporting more than academics alone. Girls also need opportunities to move, play, rest, connect, and care for themselves.
Wellness, health, and sports help girls build strength in many forms. Through movement and active play, they learn teamwork, resilience, communication, and trust. Through supportive wellness practices, they begin to understand the importance of rest, nourishment, emotional awareness, and listening to their bodies.
Summer creates space for girls to experience the joy of movement and connection. Whether they are playing a sport, participating in a group activity, spending time outdoors, or simply laughing with friends, these moments contribute to confidence and well-being.
At Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, wellness is part of learning. When girls feel supported physically, emotionally, and socially, they are better able to show up fully in every area of their lives.
STEM
STEM learning begins with curiosity.
It starts when a girl asks, “What happens if?” It grows when she builds, tests, adjusts, and tries again. It becomes powerful when she realizes that her ideas are worth exploring.
Science, technology, engineering, and math help girls strengthen problem-solving, creativity, persistence, and critical thinking. These are skills that extend far beyond a single activity or project. They help girls approach challenges with confidence and see themselves as thinkers, builders, and innovators.
Summer offers room for STEM to feel hands-on and engaging. Through experiments, activities, and creative problem-solving, girls can explore new concepts in ways that feel accessible and exciting.
When girls are encouraged to participate in STEM, they are also encouraged to take up space in fields and conversations where their perspectives matter.
Community & Leadership
Leadership often begins in small, everyday moments.
It can look like helping a friend, sharing an idea, listening to someone else, joining a group activity, or speaking up when something matters. It can grow through teamwork, trust, belonging, and the encouragement to use one’s voice.
Community plays an important role in helping girls build those skills. When girls feel safe, supported, and connected, they are more likely to participate, take healthy risks, and recognize the impact they can have on others.
At Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, girls are surrounded by a community that believes in them. Through summer programming, they have opportunities to practice leadership in real time — by working together, supporting one another, solving problems, and discovering what it means to be part of something larger than themselves.
These experiences help girls understand that leadership is not only about being in charge. It is about showing up with care, courage, and purpose.
Summer Is a Season for Growth
Summer learning matters because girls are always growing.
They are growing when they read something that sparks a new idea. They are growing when they learn about a future career path. They are growing when they move their bodies, try a new activity, solve a problem, support a friend, or speak up with confidence.
At Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, summer is more than a break from school. It is a season of exploration, connection, movement, friendship, leadership, and possibility.
When girls have access to safe spaces, meaningful activities, trusted adults, and opportunities to keep learning, they are better supported not only for the next school year, but for the future they are building every day.
Because when girls stay curious, connected, and confident, they are ready to keep rising.
