Strong, Smart, Bold: Teaching Girls What Healthy Relationships Look Like
The foundation for healthy relationships starts young. It starts with how girls treat their
friends, how they expect to be treated, and whether they know their voice matters.
At Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, we talk about respect in everyday terms: What does it feel
like when a friend really listens to you? What does it feel like when someone doesn’t?
Girls are learning to notice the difference — and to trust and respond to that feeling.
Here’s what we focus on with our girls:
Boundaries are healthy, not mean. Saying “I don’t like that” or “please stop” is a skill,
not a conflict. We practice it in low-stakes moments, so it becomes second nature.
Respect goes both ways. A good friend celebrates you, doesn’t compete with you, and
doesn’t make you feel small to feel big themselves.
Trusting your gut matters. If something feels off in a friendship, that feeling is worth
paying attention to — and worth talking to a trusted adult about.
You deserve relationships that build you up. Full stop.
These conversations aren’t one-and-done. They’re woven into mentorship, group
activities, and the everyday culture we build at Girls Inc.
Building confidence around these practices when they’re younger sets the stage for
them to have healthier relationships later. For our older girls, our Informed Together and
Healthy Sexuality curriculums build upon these concepts to address the challenges that
may arise in romantic contexts as they grow up. These series cover topics like
boundaries, consent, and more.
No matter their age, girls are ready to start gaining the tools to recognize and build
healthy relationships now. If you or your daughter want to talk more about healthy
relationships, our staff and mentors are always here.
