Eureka! is a five-year college bound program that breaks gender stereotypes through encouraging girls to confront messages that discourage them from actively participating in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and sports.
Eureka! is designed to enable girls to recognize and overcome barriers to their achievement by providing them opportunities to explore and develop skills, knowledge, and attitudes they need to live and succeed in an inequitable world.
Eureka cohorts stay together throughout the course of the program, sharing hands-on, minds-on, untimed and ungraded opportunities for guides exploration and skill and knowledge building. Girls test themselves mentally and physically and discover that they are capable of far more than they had ever thought possible.
Summers at UCSB
The program kicks off with two consecutive summers spent at UC Santa Barbara exploring science and technology, leadership and self-advocacy, and taking healthy risks.
- Science Exploration: Girls participate in hands-on engineering and robotics projects, visit college labs, and interact with professors and graduate students working in STEM fields.
- Personal Development: Girls participate in workshops surrounding leadership, healthy relationships, and communication.
- Sports and Adventure: Girls swim in the Olympic-sized pool and participate in recreation programs encouraging healthy risk-taking.
Throughout the school year the students will visit college campuses, go on field trips, engage in STEM activities, and interact with mentors and students that serve as a college support system — helping the girls to stay on track by keeping their goals in mind.
In the third year of programming, the girls shift their programming to the workplace. The Externship, which spans four weeks in the summer, is an experiential learning opportunity, where girls are paired with a professional from the community, or within an industry or workplace they have expressed interest in pursuing. The externs work 80 hours over four weeks in exchange for a stipend and a scholarship.
The fourth and fifth years of Eureka! are committed to seeing the scholars through to high school graduation. Workshops are provided to support the girls and their families as they navigate the college application process including essays, financial aid, scholarships, and preparation for the SAT/ACT.
